The Forgotten Fairytales Collection
by Katie O
The Forgotten Fairytales collection acknowledges that early fairytales contained elements of horror which, in their subsequent incarnations, have been toned down for a modern audience. The artwork draws upon this darker side to the stories, while adding a new twist to each tale.
The first two pictures above are of Hansel and Gretel, where we imagine that the young children of a poor woodcutter escaped the witch, but never quite found their way out of the woods…
In the first picture above we are introduced to Tweedledum, who is reimagined as one of many creatures who inhabit an alternative animal kingdom found through the looking glass. The second picture is of the wolf, alert and patiently waiting for his lady in red.
The first picture above is of the frog prince who still waits for the-kiss-that-never-came to release him. The second picture is of Goldilocks monster, a lonely creature that survives by stealing the food of others. The final picture above is of Tweedledee in the alternative animal kingdom, searching for his twin.
