The Concept Art behind my Exhibitions

An insight into how I reach my final piece – Katie O x

Mechanical vs Natural Concept Art

The theme for my Minor Malfunctions: Psychology of the Machine exhibition was to explore the merging of the mechanical and natural worlds. From mechanical animals to humanoid robots, these drawings are the initial ideas, that went on to become the background and centrepiece figures in my artwork.

There are as many different kinds of robots, as there are many different kinds of people.

Like people, each robot generally appears similar (head, arms, legs), but each has their own personality.

I enjoy experimenting with the basic shapes found in the human and animal kingdoms, as I try to turn those biological aspects into mechanical bodies and limbs.

Mechanical fish interest me because basic fish are thought to contain little independent thought, like mini robots swimming around. In many ways their natural, repetitive actions are like the running of a simple computer programme. Then I really started exploring what kind of creatures I could bring to life in my creative laboratory.
